CHAPTER 8

A Bear and an Eagle Walk Into a Bar

I’m not sure which of us heard the snowplow first, but since Austin knew the lay of the land better, he was the first one to connect the dots. “Sweet! County’s running ahead of schedule!”

“Mruh?” Turned out he was also the first one to be coherent, because I wasn’t there yet.

“They’re usually not plowing this early the day after we get a storm…” He ran out of steam when he looked at his phone. “Oh. Never mind.”

“Wha?”

“They’re on time. Didn’t know we’d napped that long!”

I grunted and looked at my own phone. “Oh, well, I know I’m usually not a night owl—pun intended—how about you?”

“I stay up late myself sometimes—easier to shift and go prowling when it’s late—but I’m not into all-nighters! So, you wanna call AAA and see what they can do about your car?”

“Actually… is your guy in town good? And you think he’d be available?”

“Bud? Yeah, he’s good. Not sure if he’s free or still digging people out. You want me to call him?”

“Sure—on second thought—“ And then I realized what I was about to ask of him. “No, never mind, if you don’t mind calling him, that’d be great!”

“What were you going to say?”

“Nothing, that’s fine!” But Austin looked at me like he wasn’t buying it, so I told him, “Well, I was thinking about going to town so I could scope it out, meet Bud before I entrust my car to him, and all that, but I don’t know how good the roads are between here and there even if they’ve been plowed, and I didn’t want to volunteer you to chauffeur me around!”

He got out of his chair and stretched, causing my eagle to volunteer him for chauffeuring me to the bedroom. “No prob, it’s a good excuse to get into town and pick up supplies!”

“Crap, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to eat you out of house and—“

“You kidding? You’ve got a way better appetite than I expected, but I stocked enough to feed a bear all winter! I just like to keep everything topped off for the next storm. You never know how long you’ll be snowed in next time!”

Looked like I wasn’t going to talk him out of driving me around. “OK, as long as it’s no trouble, thanks!”

“Cool—oh, and I almost forgot you need a new coat! Before we do though…” He looked at his phone again. “Before we go into town and be around people, my bear needs to roam and blow off a bit of steam first. That OK with you?”

“Yeah, matter of fact, I’d better stretch my wings before we hit town too. OK if I tag along?”

“Sure!”

We went out back again and looked and listened for signs of people nearby. The coast was clear, so I told Austin he could go first this time. I turned around and waited for him to strip, stash his clothes in the box, and shift. Once I heard bear noises replace Austin noises, I turned around to see his bear just before he turned around to give me privacy.
